A root canal may be recommended with a toothache to clean out the affected tooth nerve.

A root canal is a common dental procedure that refers to the complete cleaning of a tooth’s innermost roots. The purpose of a root canal is to save the tooth from needing to be extracted as well as prevent and relieve pain.

The root and center of your tooth is made up of nerves, pulp, and blood vessels. Tooth decay and cracks in your tooth can expose the sterile environment of your inner tooth with bacteria which creates an infection. This infection should be dealt with in a timely manner.

A root canal is not only performed to remove the nerve from the tooth but to clean, disinfect, and seal off the space that is occupied by the pulp. A properly treated root canal will give your body the chance to repair any damaged bone or soft tissue that was affected by the infected tooth.

If a root canal is put off for too long, it can further jeopardize your ability to keep that tooth. Once the tooth becomes necrotic, it will begin to affect your jaw bone. Left untreated, pain and swelling are likely to occur. Ultimately, the tooth will need to be extracted if a successful root canal is not performed.

There is always a chance that a root canal could fail. The sooner you act on a tooth that needs a root canal, the higher your chances of saving the tooth from extraction. Root canals that are dealt with in a timely manner are successful in about 90 percent of instances.

In rare instances, a tooth can become painful or diseased years after a root canal. In those cases, a patient may need to seek out retreatment of the same tooth.

If a root canal fails for some reason, there are still additional options. Dr. Mathis will discuss with you all of your options when you visit the office.
