CloSYS - A one-stop mouthwash

The most common question I get asked by my patients is “what type of mouthwash should I be using?” I used to say “they’re all essentially the same” until I discovered CloSYS.

Hi. I’m Michael and I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and I’ve been a hygienist since 2015. I’ve learned a lot in my short time of practicing dental hygiene. I read a lot about oral care products in my spare time, mostly on Facebook groups. One product name that came up a lot in these discussion forums was CloSYS. I had never heard of it; naturally, my curious mind did some research

I’m the one who has to know what others think about something before I will try it myself; something about the unknown causes me a lot of anxiety. At one point in my life, I was getting comments from my partner telling me that my breath was bad, which is not something a dental hygienist should be hearing! I would hear these comments after just brushing, flossing and brushing my tongue. Bad breath is something that is multifactorial, meaning there is not just one thing that can cause someone to have bad breath. There could be underlying infection, tooth decay, gum disease, diet related, medication related, etc. The list could go on-and-on.

A brief overview

The oral cavity is an incubator for bacteria, both good and bad. The bad bacteria that are present are notorious for causing cavities or gum disease. These bacteria thrive in specific living conditions.

Think back to science class when you learned about the pH scale: it goes from 1-14, 1-6.9 is acidic, 7 is neutral and 7.1-14 is basic. Bacteria that cause cavities like an acidic environment, or a pH below 7. Bacteria that cause more tartar build-up and gum disease prefer a basic environment, or a pH above 7.

What drew me into CloSYS was its pH balancing properties. Generally speaking, patients who get more cavities tend to not have gum disease and patients where gum disease is more prevalent tend to have less cavities. However, some of my patients tend to fluctuate between acidic and basic, meaning they get cavities and tartar build-up. CloSYS is a one-stop mouthwash that can help with both. If the pH in the oral cavity can be as close to 7 as possible, the bacteria are still present but cannot thrive as well. CloSYS works for me personally as it helps control the pH, which means that the bad breath bacteria that live inside my mouth cannot work as well, reducing bad breath overall and resulting in less comments from my partner about my bad breath.

CloSYS - how it can help

There are so many mouthrinses on the market and they all make different claims. CloSYS, in my opinion, does it all. They have a lot of research available on their website and I encourage you to read through their website and reviews and try it for yourself. If you're unsure if it is right for you, ask your dental hygienist or dentist. https://closys.com/pages/research

Some ways it may help you:

  1. Reduces bad breath

  2. Aids in combating dry mouth

  3. Helps to heal mouth sores or ulcers

  4. Improves oral health overall

So, how is it different?

First and foremost, it comes unflavored. This is a big win for patients with sensitive mouths. The gentle mint flavor actually comes on the side in a little dropper. Personally, I add the entire flavor bottle to the mouthrinse and it is still gentle and tastes great. It is alcohol-free, so it won’t burn or dry your mouth out. It is sulfate-free, which is important because sulfates make it hard for the gums to heal if there is inflammation. Also, it is triclosan free. Triclosan is an anti-microbial that used to be manufactured in soaps and detergents; it is also in a lot of OTC toothpastes.

“Research suggests triclosan may contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs and be be harmful to the immune system.”

They also have other products besides mouthrinse that I have not used, such as toothpaste and breath spray, which I’m sure are just as effective but could be even more effective if used together as a system.

Overall

There are so many great things about this mouthrinse. I could review them all but this blog post would turn into an encyclopedia on one product. I encourage you to go to their website and read their research and reviews on the product. Combine CloSYS products with a good electric toothbrush and a good quality floss and you’ll be surprised at your next dental visit that you get a good report card! The benefits are so worth the price tag. CloSYS is not the cheapest mouthrinse on the market and sometimes you have to spend more to get more. I’ve seen it in the dental aisle for about $13. I buy mine on Amazon and it is about $11.

Take my advice and try it. You nor your dental hygienist will not be disappointed.

This is a positive review. However, it does not reveal what Closys is. What exactly it is made from. This seems to be a big secret, because no one (I have found) seems to know.
